What are Standard Mattress Sizes?
When looking for a new mattress, selecting the right size is a key factor in achieving the result of peaceful, healthy sleep. Knowing what the correct size should be can be difficult, so getting the right fit for yourself can be a challenge. You bedroom size and price ranges are clearly determining factors in your eventual choice of bed size. The standard mattress sizes are as follows
SIZES — DIMENSIONS (IN) — DIMENSIONS (CM)
Crib — 27” X 52” — 68.5cm X 132cm
Twin — 39” X 75” — 96.5cm X 190.5cm
Twin XL — 39” X 80” — 96.5cm X 203.5cm
Full — 54” X 75” — 134.5cm X 190.5cm
Queen — 60” X 80” — 152.5cm X 203.5cm
King — 76” X 80” — 193cm X 203.5cm
Cal King — 72” X 84” — 183cm X 213.5cm
Queen and King sizes are later introductions into the marketplace. They were debuted in the 1940s by manufacturers in the US. Twin and Full (also known as “Double”) sizes were the norm prior to that. The new sizes did not really gain a foothold for another decade, though. Bed Times Magazine takes a look at a History of King and Queen Mattress Sizes.

Why Choose Memory Foam?
Memory foam has been a significant improvement over inner coil mattresses in several ways. It is at firm (giving adequate support) and yet it conforms to the body shape of the sleeper, thereby evenly distributing weight on the mattress. This property is known as visco-elasticity and leads to the term “visco mattress”, which is an informal name for these products. How visco-elastic a particular item is depends on the particular manufacturing method used. We have more on production and material properties of memory foam on our dedicated page: What is Memory Foam?
The benefits of memory foam include:
- Reducing tossing and turning during the night, so you sleep better.
- Even distribution of body weight. This gives your body better support and prevents undue pressure on certain parts of the body.
- Better for healing from injuries, swelling and pain, because excessive pressure is not applied to the ailing points.
- Most brands are produced with material that is resistant to allergens, such as dust mites.
How expensive are Mem Foam Mattresses?
A mem foam mattress will -on average- be higher priced than a comparable inner coil model. But there is a good degree of variation in price because modern manufacturing technology allows for significant marketplace competition. We have featured a number of the foremost brands in this category. Check price ranges below.
Isn’t Memory Foam Unhealthy?
In modern production, there are several different methods to manufacture memory foam. The base material in all cases is polyurethane, to which gas is infused, thereby creating a foam. Additional materials, such as various forms of gel, can be further added to induce varying characteristics in the final product, such as greater air flow or cooling. Memory foam has developed a negative reputation because of the phenomenon of off-gassing, whereby unpleasant smelling chemicals -used in manufacturing process- evaporate from the material. These can produce headaches or allergies. For more on possible health problems, read our dedicated article: Is Memory Foam Toxic?
There are some disadvantages to memory foam. They include:
- High Temperatures: Memory foam can become too warm at night. This is the nature of the material. However, many brands now have added materials producing a neutralizing or cooling effect. Gel infused foam mattresses are an example of this
- Unhealthy Chemicals: In past decades, products could contain a number of harmful chemicals such as formaldehyde. Because of improved manufacturing procedures however, this is much less likely to be the case in the modern marketplace.
- Sinking into the Material: because memory foam re-aligns itself to the shape of the user, it is possible to feel stuck, as if one is sinking into the bed. Temperature-sensitive memory foam is particularly susceptible to this of this phenomenon.
Are There Different Types of Memory Foam?
There have been great advances recently in the production of mattresses and products in the bedding category generally. With memory foam, many differing production methods are now possible and provide a wide variety of resultant materials. Gel foam is a particularly popular variant. Click here for more on Gel Memory Foam Mattresses.
Types of memory foam can broadly be categorized into three variants:
- Standard Memory Foam: These have not changed much since they first appeared in the 1970s. They are still produced from petroleum-based products, which makes them not particularly eco-friendly.
- Plant-Based Memory Foam: These are composed of materials such as coconut foam, soy and other plant based materials. These mattresses spring back more quickly than standard memory foam mattresses and have a much better environmental footprint.
- Gel Memory Foam: Cooling properties are added through a combination of traditional memory foam and gel. This can be in a layer within the mattress or it can be infused into the memory foam during manufacture.
