What is a Queen Bed Memory Foam Mattress?
A queen size mattress is longer and wider than a Full size. However, it is narrower than a King. It is 60″ wide and 80″ long. This makes it the same length as a standard King, but 4″ shorter than a California King. The standard sizes for mattresses are as follows:
SIZES — DIMENSIONS (IN) — DIMENSIONS (CM)
Crib — 27” X 52” — 68.5cm X 132cm
Twin — 39” X 75” — 96.5cm X 190.5cm
Twin XL — 39” X 80” — 96.5cm X 203.5cm
Full — 54” X 75” — 134.5cm X 190.5cm
Queen — 60” X 80” — 152.5cm X 203.5cm
King — 76” X 80” — 193cm X 203.5cm
Cal King — 72” X 84” — 183cm X 213.5cm
It was not until the 1940s that American mattress manufacturers introduced Queen and King size models . Twin and Full sizes had been the norm previous to that. The new sizes were not fully embraced by the public for another decade, however. For more on this history, Bed Times Magazine here gives a History of King and Queen Bed Mattress Sizes.
Should You Choose Memory Foam?
Memory foam offers several advantages over standard coil mattresses, both in terms of health benefits and quality. It is at once both firm (providing appropriate support) and yet able to conform to the contours of the body shape of the user. It therefore evenly distributes one’s weight on the mattress. This contouring property, termed visco-elasticity, varies depending on the particular methods used in the manufacturing process. Here is a more detailed look at Visco Memory Foam Mattress brands
Memory Foam Mattress Price Ranges?
A queen bed memory foam mattress will -on average- come at a higher price point than a similar spring coil brand. But there is a wide price variation since the technology is now used by numerous manufacturers, allowing for marketplace competition. Below are our featured brands. We have dedicated pages reviewing a number of manufacturers.
Memory Foam Health Concerns
Over the years there have been questions regarding just how unhealthy memory foam might be. These days though, there are numerous ways to manufacture the product. The base material is polyurethane. To this gas is infused to form a foam. Nowadays, other materials, such as various forms of gel, can be added to produce specific characteristics in the final material: Greater aeration or cooling, for example. One characteristic of memory foam that has, over the years, given it a negative reputation is the phenomenon of off-gassing. It results in the release of foul smelling chemicals used in manufacture, sometimes producing headaches or allergies. In modern manufacture though, there are many advanced methods which eliminate this problem completely. We have more on possible health problems in our dedicated article: Is Memory Foam Toxic?
Queen Bed Memory Foam Mattress Prices
A queen size memory foam mattress can range in price anywhere from a low in the range of $150 to highs in the range of $2,000 for higher end brands. We are featuring here, brands across the full price spectrum.
Memory foam mattresses are on average more expensive than standard inner coil spring models. This is due to the higher cost of manufacture. Within the luxury niche, prices can vary widely depending on the type of foam used, the material of the various layers of the product and whether the mattress is entirely composed of memory foam rather than a hybrid.
